You figured out the average cost of a kitchen remodel. You wrote out your remodel bathroom ideas. You learned to budget remodeling and you did it all just in the knick of time. Winter is right around the corner and now that you live in the house you’ve always dreamed of, it’s time to keep it warm. So shut those windows, turn those heaters up and take a look at some Mihalko’s General Contracting tips and tricks to keeping your home warm.

Keep Your Home Warm

1. Move Furniture. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to keep a piece of furniture situated throughout every season, but it does not help in winter. Furniture close to radiators and vents can absorb the heat, or even block it, ultimately preventing warm air from circulating throughout the house. Moving furniture away from radiators and vents will ensure that the heat gets into your home and keeps you warm!

2. Heat Reflective Aluminum Foil. When dealing with radiators, a great way to keep the heat in is heat reflective aluminum foil. When radiators are located on the outside wall of a home, a lot of the heat the radiator generates is absorbed into the wall and lost to the cool temperatures outdoor. Placing heat reflective aluminum foil between the radiator and the wall will help reflect the heat back into your home and keep you warm.

3. Thick Curtains. Insulation in windows is important. Though, no matter how well your windows are insulated, they are bound to let some heat escape.  Like a sweater for your home, thick curtains are a great way to prevent that from happening. Thick curtains will prevent heat from escaping your home and cold air from entering.

4. Door Snake and Door Curtain. While it isn’t the first thought of most homeowners, the front door is often a large factor to a cold winter home. A door snake is a great way to prevent heat from escaping and a cool draft entering from underneath the door. Additionally, hanging a thick curtain on the inside of your front doorway is another great way to trap heat indoors, but also obtain that privacy you’ve always wanted.
