April showers are on their way. If you’re considering doing work to your roof you may want to start the construction by April 26th. Due to continued higher raw material costs, roofing prices are set to increase on April 26th. Unforeseen roof problems like leakage and moisture occur regularly and it helps to know the anatomy of your roof so you can identify your problem. Mihalko’s is here to help you better understand the structure of your roof.

Ridge Board. The ridge board is a horizontal wood piece that lies at the peak of the roof. It establishes the apex of the roof’s triangle.

Rafters. The rafters create the slope of the roof. They are attached to the ridge board and run downward to the exterior walls. The rafters provide the architecture which enables the roof to shed water and other elements that may fall on top of the roof.

Ceiling Joists. The ceiling joists are the main support of the rafters. They act as ties which help resist any kind of outward thrust a roof may experience.

Purlines. The purlins (not pictured) are boards of wood that run parallel to the ridge board down and perpendicular to the rafters. Purlins provide a way to fasten the roof sheathing among other roofing materials.

If you’re having problems with your roof it may help to be able to identify certain parts. The roof is the one thing over your head that is protecting you from the outdoor elements.
