Home Hazard #1: Kitchen

Did you know the kitchen is the number one space in your home where a fire is most likely to ignite? While the kitchen is usually one of the main focus rooms in our homes, leaving it unattended for a short amount of time can lead to a big problem. Here are a few tips for you and your family to practice fire safety in the kitchen:

  1. Limit distractions!
  2. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  3. Never leave anything cooking unattended especially while you are frying, grilling or broiling food.
  4. Keep anything that can easily catch fire – such as oven mitts, dish towels, wooden utensils and food packaging away from the range!
  5. Grease fires grow when you throw water on them – they must be smothered. If a fire starts to get out of control, get you and your family out of the house and close the doors behind you.
  6. Always be on alert!!

Mihalko’s has seen many fires start in the kitchen, but fires can quickly spread to other rooms and smoke damage can ruin many of your belongings. It’s important to always be alert and aware in the kitchen to make sure you are taking all steps necessary to prevent a fire!
