Whether it be adding an extension or developing bar designs, when working with a contracting company there are many aspects you should be aware of. One of these aspects is who your general contractor is hiring as a carpenter. Often times general contractors will outsource their carpentry jobs to local carpenters, and often times general contractors will not actually research the carpenter they’re hiring. Luckily, we have a few tips for you that will help you know you’ve got a good carpenter!

1. Know your carpenter. You may not be aware, but there are many different types of carpenters for many different types of things. Find out exactly what you’re remodeling in your home and then ask your contractor what kind of carpenter you will need.

2. Credentials. All carpenters need to be licensed and have up to date papers. Ask your carpenter to see his credentials in order to make sure you’re dealing with an actual carpenter and not just a skilled craftsman! A good carpenter will have the correct paper work and be happy to show you.

3. Costs. Ask your carpenter about what sort of products he or she will be using and then comparison shop. Though, it should be noted, going cheap on a carpenter is not always the best way to go. Sometimes going cheap can mean cutting corners and cutting corners is not okay.

4. Availability. While necessary, carpentry jobs can sometimes take a while and will almost always be very inconvenient. Make sure the carpenter you get is available now, and not months from now. In addition, make sure they have enough time to finish the job now and not stop half way through!
